Police service resumes at UPC de Lomas de Urdesa after almost three months of being suspended

A month ago, Bertha left her home in Lomas de Urdesa, in the north of Guayaquil, at 06:30. That is the time in which she goes to one of the main streets of the citadel to take the express to her work on the road to Daule.

When she was walking towards the traffic light at the Lomas de Urdesa Gate, a man got out of a vehicle in which two people were traveling and pointed a gun at her to steal her wallet and watch.

Frightened, she yelled at someone who was crossing the area to alert them of the robbery. The criminals sped up and fled after the assault.

Like Bertha, two other people who have lived in Lomas de Urdesa for more than two decades have been threatened, assaulted, or have had auto parts stolen.

“We walk, but we walk in fear. We always want to be calm and know that we have the police close by,” said a resident.

To monitor this sector of Urdesa, the Police once again opened the Community Police Unit (UPC) located on Cedros and Olmos streets diagonal to Portal de Lomas.

Lieutenant Colonel Freddy González, commander(s) of the Modelo district, indicated that the unit had been closed since the November 2022 attacks, when there were attacks on police headquarters in different parts of the city.

In this unit since this Wednesday, February 8, the police service was reinstated. Two citizen service agents will remain on site. While others will carry out patrols in a vehicle and on a motorcycle.

This is in addition to patrolling on foot. The area of action of the UPC will be around fifteen blocks for immediate action, indicated González.

“Routes and critical points such as traffic lights, stairways and parks, where more robberies occur, will be monitored more carefully,” he explained.

What are the main incidents captured outside the campuses? Guayaquil has 133 institutions with external video surveillance

In these days, he announced, it will be reviewed whether the community chat in the area remains active to coordinate actions with the residents.

For a resident of the citadel, the fact that care at the UPC has been reactivated will provide a bit of peace of mind for those who go for a walk with their pets every day or walk from their homes in the highest part towards Víctor Emilio Estrada or Las Aguas. (YO)
