The president of Navarre, Maria Chivite, has announced the tender for the new Belate tunnel with an investment of 95 million euros. The president has emphasized that the duplication of the tunnels will be the “most relevant and complex” road work in the Foral Community in recent years.
Chivite made the announcement at a press conference where she explained the details of the project, accompanied by the delegate of the Spanish Government in Navarra, Jose Luis Arasti; the Minister of Territorial Cohesion, Bernardo Ciriza; and the general director of Public Works and Infrastructures, Pedro Lopez.
The new Belate tunnel will have a length of 2885 meters approximately, similar to that of the current gallery. The doubling of the Belate tunnel will have an execution period of 45 months.

will be built five emergency galleries, located every 500 meters, which will connect with the existing tunnel. The central gallery will allow the passage of emergency vehicles and the other four will be pedestrianized with access to light vehicles.
The two lanes of the new tunnel will have 3.5 meters wide each of them, with a 3 m shoulder on the right side in the direction of traffic and another 1 meter on the left side. On both sides of the road are projected two sidewalks of 0.75 meters each. The gauge, that is, the height allowed for vehicles that circulate inside this tunnel, will be 5.5 meters.
The duplication of the Belate tunnels will make it possible to have one way galleries with independent circulation directions, which allow the number of vehicles circulating through each tube to be reduced.

The Government of Navarra has initiated this legislature the integral transformation of the road N-121-A to solve the safety problems of this road that connects Pamplona with Iparralde through Irun (Gipuzkoa). The transformation entails, in addition to the splitting of Belate and Almandoz, the conversion of the road into a 2+1 road.
The 2+1 execution works began in 2021. So far, the first 17 kilometers of the track have been completed, including the sections between Ezkaba and Olabe / Olabe and Lantz. Works are currently being carried out from Oronoz-Mugairi to Sunbilla.
