China has overtaken the United States in the number of ground-based launchers of intercontinental missiles (ICBMs), writes The Wall Street Journal, citing data from the US military.
According to the publication, this was announced by the commander of the US Strategic Command to the relevant congressional committees on January 26.
At the same time, the United States still surpasses China in the number of missiles themselves and nuclear warheads on these missiles. Many of the Chinese launchers are empty, officials say. In addition, Washington does not take into account in this case its missiles, which are launched from submarines and bombers.
The newspaper notes that after the appearance of this information, the head of the Committee on the Armed Services of the House of Representatives, Mike Rogers, said that Washington cannot allow “parity” on ICBMs with Beijing, so the time has come for the United States to “increase the ability to counter this threat.”
However, the number of such warheads is regulated by the treaty between Russia and the United States on strategic offensive arms (START-3). The contract expires in 2026. Both countries noted that it is necessary to start discussions on a new document, but there are currently no active negotiations.
