Heavy snowfalls followed by thaws can cause the collapse of buildings and structures in the regions of four federal districts of Russia, warns the All-Russian Research Institute for Civil Defense and Emergencies (VNII GOChS).
According to experts, according to long-term statistics, in February, the number of incidents associated with the collapse of elements of wide-span structures of buildings, dilapidated roofs of houses and structures increases. The main reasons for such incidents are heavy snowfalls and thaws, as a result of which the weight of dry snow increases significantly. Also, untimely and poor-quality snow and ice removal, repair work can become a factor in the collapse.
As noted in the message on the institute’s website, the highest probability of such incidents is predicted in the Primorsky, Khabarovsk and Krasnoyarsk Territories, Novosibirsk and Irkutsk Regions, the Khanty-Mansiysk and Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrugs, the Republic of Tyva and most of the Northwestern Federal District.
