Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has died in Dubai after a long illness at the age of 79. It is reported by the Associated Press.
Musharraf was born in 1943 in Delhi. After Pakistan gained independence, he graduated from the military academy and took part in the fighting against India. He has held a number of positions in the Pakistan Armed Forces, and in 1998 became the Chief of Staff of the Pakistan Army.
He came to power in Pakistan in a bloodless 1999 military coup. Musharraf first became the country’s prime minister and served as president from 2001 to 2008. He voluntarily resigned in 2008 amid impending impeachment.
Having lived abroad for several years, Musharraf made an attempt to return to power again, taking advantage of the 2013 elections. He was detained and placed under house arrest in connection with criminal cases of treason and the murder of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in 2007. In 2016, Musharraf was allowed to travel to Dubai for treatment, where he has remained ever since.
Musharraf was sentenced to death in absentia in 2019.
