Police in India have arrested more than 2,000 men as part of a raid to combat illegal child marriages, NDTV reports, citing police officials.

Arrests were made in the northeastern Indian state of Assam, police detained men married to girls under the age of 18. According to the local police chief, 2,169 people have been arrested so far, based on 4,074 cases registered by the police.

At the same time, according to the channel, some girls protested against the arrests of their husbands, saying that they were left without a livelihood.

In accordance with the Indian family code, marriages in the South Asian republic are allowed for women from the age of 18, for men – from the age of 21. However, poverty, lack of education, and social norms, especially in rural areas, lead to child marriage across the country.

A bill is pending in the Indian Parliament to raise the age of marriage for women from 18 to 21. India’s Minister for Women and Children’s Development Smriti Irani said the initiative should enable girls to complete their education and achieve economic independence.
