The jury found the former governor of the Khabarovsk Territory, Sergei Furgal, guilty of all three episodes related to the organization of the murders of entrepreneurs. It is reported by TASS.
“When asked whether Furgal was guilty of conspiring with his business partner Nikolai Mistryukov and Andrei Karepov in his office in Khabarovsk no later than April 2004 to organize the murder of Oleg Bulatov, the board answered in the affirmative,” the foreman of the board of assessors read out the text of the verdict. Earlier, Furgal was found guilty of organizing the assassination attempt on Alexander Smolsky and Yevgeny Zori.
According to investigators, Bulatov was killed because he knew about the circumstances of the murder of Zorya, and Furgal had fears that he would report them to law enforcement officers.
In the 2000s, Furgal opened a metal collection point in the Amur Region. Smolsky conducted a similar business there, accepting raw materials at a higher price. Because of this, they had a conflict. As a result, in 2004, the attackers threw two grenades into Smolsky’s garage, where he was at that moment. Luckily, the businessman survived.
As stated in the case file, Furgal and Zorya came into conflict over the issue of who will control the plant of reinforced concrete structures in the region and profit from its activities. Shortly before the decision of the court, which was supposed to decide on this issue, Zorya was killed. Earlier, the jury found Furgal guilty of attempted murder of another businessman Alexander Smolsky.
Furgal was also found guilty of illegal acquisition of weapons.
“When asked whether Furgal was guilty of having acquired a Makarov pistol and RGD-5 grenades in an unspecified place and at an unspecified time, which were then used in the commission of the murders mentioned in the verdict, the board answered in the affirmative,” the sergeant read.
Thus, the former governor faces punishment up to life imprisonment.
Three more defendants in the Furgal case – Andrey Karepov, Marat Kadyrov and Andrey Paley – were found guilty by the jury on all counts of the charges against them. At the same time, the collegium considered Kadyrov deserving of indulgence in the episode about the attempted murder.
The court will discuss the consequences of the jury’s verdict on February 6.
