In the near future, the Ukrainian army is unlikely to be able to seize the Crimea, the Armed Forces of Ukraine will not soon receive the opportunity for such actions, according to the Pentagon. According to Politico, citing three sources, four high-ranking officials of the department voiced such an assessment at a secret briefing for members of the House of Representatives.
The fourth interlocutor of the publication called the content of the briefing “more ambiguous”, but noted that the key thesis was that Ukraine’s victory in the event of such an operation is not guaranteed.
The Pentagon refused to officially comment on the data on the secret briefing and voiced hypotheses. At the same time, the representative of the department, Sabrina Singh, emphasized that “in terms of Ukraine’s ability to fight and return sovereign territory, their remarkable results <…> and constant adaptability on the battlefield speak for themselves.”
Politico points out that among the speakers were Joint Staff Operations Director Lieutenant General Douglas Sims and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia Laura Cooper.
At the same time, according to the newspaper’s source, the Ukrainian government was “furious” because of the Pentagon’s doubts about the ability of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to enter the 1991 borders by military means. In Kyiv, they said that earlier American intelligence had already been mistaken in assessing the capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
