The decision made by President Guillermo Lasso became effective this Wednesday.
Two people who were pardoned by President Guillermo Lasso left the Sucumbíos Social Rehabilitation Center on Wednesday.
Those released, Carlos Chacha and Gonzalo Villamil, were serving a four-year sentence for the crime of paralyzing public services during the protests in October 2019.
After spending two years in prison, the president ordered his freedom with the signing of Decree 245, in which he granted the “presidential pardon”, which consists of the forgiveness of the custodial sentences and fines that have been imposed on them.
Chacha and Villamil were received by relatives and authorities outside the rehabilitation center, where they had been transferred two months ago from the Archidona prison, located in the Napo province.
“It was a surprise for us to receive the news of the pardon, we thought it was one more lie, I would like that they do not see us as a campaign trophy, we will be together with the people, a symbol of unity and solidarity, not of political selfishness,” said Villamil.
With this pardon, eight of nine people have been released, including the prefect Amado Chávez and former assemblyman Yofre Poma, who were sentenced for paralysis of public service after the seizure of the Petroecuador pumping station in Nueva Loja during the protests of the 7th of October 2019.
