Spain plans to transfer four to six Leopard 2A4s to Ukraine. It is reported by Pais, citing sources.
The final number of vehicles will depend on the condition of the 53 tanks, which have been in reserve for about ten years. The Spanish Ministry of Defense is negotiating with the military industry on the urgent restoration of machines. The estimated repair time for the Spanish Leopards is two and a half months, and the training of the Ukrainian military will take the same amount of time.
The training will take place at the San Gregorio National Training Center in Zaragoza, which has Leopard simulators. The Ukrainian and Spanish sides want to start training at least ten tank crews and technical personnel as soon as possible.
The head of the Spanish Ministry of Defense, Margarita Robles, said that tanks would supply tanks to Ukraine in the spring. The time it takes to repair the vehicles will be spent on training the Ukrainian military.
Spain is reported to have 347 Leopard tanks, of which 108 are 2A4 models (purchased from Germany in the 1990s) and 239 are 2E, the Spanish version, one of the most modern. 219 vehicles are battle tanks, the rest are training ones, the channel’s interlocutors said.
