Russian Ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov said that Russia is committed to the implementation of the provisions of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) and holds the United States responsible for the escalation around the agreement. His statement was published in the Telegram channel of the Russian diplomatic mission.

Earlier, The Wall Street Journal reported on the State Department’s report to Congress with “the first case in which the United States accuses Russia of violating the treaty” concluded in 2011. The department considered that Russia violated the treaty by refusing to allow inspections and rejecting Washington’s requests for a meeting to discuss compliance with the document. The State Department called on Moscow to allow inspections and return to a constructive dialogue.

According to Antonov, the United States “shifts from a sick head to a healthy one” and refuses to see the root causes of the current situation, which was the result of a “hybrid war unleashed by the West” against Russia.

“Arms control cannot be isolated from geopolitical realities. Under the current conditions, we consider it unjustified, untimely and inappropriate to invite the US military to our strategic facilities,” the ambassador said.

Antonov stressed that Russia still considers the START as a useful tool in the field of strategic stability and intends to comply with its central restrictions, continue to exchange notifications and related data. Nevertheless, he noted, until the United States reconsiders “the line of inflicting strategic defeat on us,” advances in the field of arms control are impossible.
