In an interview with Gazeta.Ru, an ophthalmologist, Ph.D. Elias Raid revealed the main causes of myopia in children.
The expert pointed out that the degree of manifestation of myopia can vary depending on environmental factors and the organism itself. “Any long and untimely near visual load, especially gadgets, low head tilt when reading, long stay indoors provoke a faster drop in distance vision,” he said.
According to the doctor, the only proven way to prevent the development and progression of myopia is active walks in the fresh air for at least 2 hours a day.
Raid clarified that in this case there are several factors – stimulation of vitamin D production under the influence of ultraviolet radiation, relaxation of accommodation when focusing on distant objects, general strengthening of the body during active games.
“Up to 7-8 years, the use of screens at close range is not recommended – smartphones, tablets, it is desirable to exclude the child from everyday life. Computer time is limited according to age. The font of books should be adapted to the appropriate age – the younger the child, the larger the font. An important factor is that a close head tilt when drawing or reading is a kind of bad habit that should not be allowed in children, ”the expert added.
To date, there is no guaranteed method of therapeutic treatment of myopia. It lends itself to surgical correction with a laser, but it can only be used after 18 years.
