Despite the intention of Ukraine to join the European Union in two years, which was announced by Prime Minister Denys Shmygal, the EU authorities are not so optimistic about this issue, writes Politico, citing high-ranking European officials.
“We need a reformed Ukraine. We cannot have the same Ukraine as before the outbreak of hostilities, ”said one of the interlocutors of the publication, who took part in the preparations for the summit on February 3, which will discuss Ukraine’s entry into the union. Another interlocutor of the publication called Kyiv’s expectations “quite high” and recalled that Ukraine must first fulfill all the conditions set by the European Commission.
Shmygal, in turn, told the publication that he expects a “significant leap” after the meeting, in particular on an agreement on a visa-free regime for industrial goods, suspension of customs duties on Ukrainian exports for another year, joining the SEPA payment scheme (Single Euro Payments Area) and the inclusion of Ukraine in the EU mobile roaming area. According to the Prime Minister, Ukraine “has a very ambitious plan to join the European Union within the next two years.”
Recall that Ukraine received the status of a candidate member of the EU in June last year. At the same time, many European politicians assumed that it would take a long time for the country to join the union.
