The Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran has suspended diplomatic activities, Khalaf Khalafov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the republic, said at a briefing.

According to him, the diplomatic activity of the embassy has been completely suspended. Five employees remained in the diplomatic mission, who will guard the administrative building and property of the embassy, but they will not conduct diplomatic activities, TASS reports.

Khalafov added that the decision to suspend activities does not apply to the Consulate General of Azerbaijan in Tabriz, which continues to work. According to him, if Azerbaijani citizens in Iran need help, they can apply to this Consulate General.

The decision to evacuate the embassy staff was made in connection with an armed attack on the diplomatic mission on January 27, as a result of which the head of security was killed and two of his colleagues were injured. According to Khalafov, Baku informed Tehran that it does not trust Iran in the issue of ensuring the safety of the embassy staff.
