A study by the Dutch artist Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641) for the painting “Saint Jerome with an Angel”, discovered on a farm in a barn under a layer of bird droppings, was sold at auction for $ 3.1 million, reports CNN.

The painting was discovered in 2002 on a farm near New York. The canvas lay in the barn under a layer of bird droppings. The sketch was later bought for $600 by collector Albert Roberts. He suggested that the work belongs to the Golden Age of Dutch painting (XVII century) and gave the picture for examination.

In 2019, art critic Susan Barnes concluded that the study found on the farm was a “surprisingly well-preserved” work by Van Dyck. According to her, the oil sketch for the painting “Saint Jerome with an Angel”, which is now kept in the Museum of Rotterdam, the artist wrote at the beginning of his career. This is one of two major studies that Van Dyck painted from living models.

The collector who bought the painting died in 2021. The painting was put up for auction at Sotheby’s. As a result, it was sold for $3.1 million. The auction house said that part of the proceeds will go to the Albert B. Roberts Foundation, which provides support to artists and other charitable organizations.
