Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held telephone conversations with Israeli and Palestinian counterparts and urged them to refrain from “any actions that could provoke the degradation of the situation,” the press service of the Russian diplomatic department reports.
On January 28 and 29, Lavrov reportedly spoke with Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen and State of Palestine Minister for Foreign Affairs and Compatriot Affairs Riyad Maliki. The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that Moscow is “seriously concerned about a new round of violence in the zone of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, fraught with the resumption of a full-scale armed confrontation, which could lead to new casualties and destruction.”
Lavrov also stressed “the urgent need to resume the efforts of the Quartet of international mediators in order to restart the negotiation process between the Israeli and Palestinian sides on a generally recognized international legal basis,” the ministry said in a statement.
