Four Republican congressmen – Troy Nels, Eli Crane, Paul Gosar and Lauren Bobert – demanded clarification from US President Joe Biden and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin about the supply of tanks to Ukraine. The congressmen’s letter was published by The Daily Caller.
The authors of the letter expressed concern about the recent US decision to transfer 31 Abrams M1A2 tanks to Kyiv and asked several related questions. Politicians are interested, for example, in how Biden and Lloyd can prevent American military equipment from falling into the hands of criminal groups or terrorists. They also asked how the White House and the Department of Defense can ensure that the tanks are maintained properly and will be returned to the US after they have been used.
The Republicans also asked if the president and the secretary of defense would audit the weapons transferred to Ukraine. “How does your administration plan to account for the loss and destruction of any U.S. defense items and reimburse American taxpayers?” — wrote the authors of the letter.
“We were not chosen by the American people to constantly spend hard-earned taxpayer dollars on conflict on the other side of the world,” said Troy Nels. He noted that the White House, while supplying weapons to Ukraine, does not monitor how equipment, ammunition and other forms of military assistance are used.
