An oarfish was found dead on the beach of Tonsupa, in the south of the province of Esmeraldas, on the night of this Wednesday the 25th.
Locals and tourists were surprised to see this species shine between the sea water and the beach.
They immediately notified the authorities, while some fishermen and locals located the fish, approximately three meters long, on top of paddle boats and a boat.
Some of those present tried to fillet it to take the meat, but it was prohibited for not knowing the origin of this marine species.
Can the oarfish predict earthquakes?
Others, on the other hand, took photos and selfies.
This is the first giant oarfish to appear on the Ecuadorian coast this year and some, without scientific basis, argue that it is related to earthquakes.
This is the second dead fish found in the coastal profile of Esmeraldas. The previous one was about the stone casting of the Port Authority, in Las Palmas, in July 2022.
This fish, also called the king of herrings, is a species of lampridiform fish in the regalecidae family.
The beliefs
The Japanese popular belief attributes that the appearance on the coasts of these fish predict catastrophes, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, cyclones, among others. This was so because in ancient times it was believed that the oarfish had a close relationship with the divinities of the seas, which is why it was known as Ryugu no Tsukai or ‘messenger from the palace of the Sea God’.
But contrary to superstition, the unusual appearance of deep-sea fish like oarfish or skinny ribbonfish in shallow water doesn’t mean an earthquake is about to strike, according to a statistical analysis.
The study, published in 2019 in the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America (BSSA), contradicts long-standing Japanese folklore that deep-sea fish sightings are a sign of an impending earthquake, said Yoshiaki Orihara of the University of Tokai in Japan and his colleagues.
They videotape the capture of the strange six-meter oarfish that is associated with natural disasters such as tsunamis and earthquakes
When the researchers examined the relationship between deep-sea fish occurrences and earthquakes in Japan, they found only one event that could have been plausibly correlated, out of 336 fish sightings and 221 earthquakes. (YO)
