The YASunidos collective reported, through social networks, that its complaint, filed in 2014, before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) was admitted and will be reviewed by the international entity.
Yasunidos requested that “the violation of political rights” of Ecuador be declared against the 757,623 people who supported with their signature the holding of a popular consultation on oil exploitation within the Yasuní National Park.
YASunidos insists that the question about the ITT is viable despite the fact that oil production in the area began several years ago
These signatures, which began to be collected in April 2014, sought to get the Ecuadorian Executive, at that time led by Rafael Correa, to hold a referendum to make a collective decision on oil exploitation in one of the areas with the greatest biodiversity in the world.
The National Electoral Council (CNE), in 2014, chaired by Domingo Paredes, unsubscribed more than 400,000 signatures. it did not provide the list of canceled registrations and the names of the verifiers who canceled them. YASunidos went to the IACHR.
When the consultation was not carried out, the government had a free hand to exploit the controversial oil field that was inaugurated on September 7, 2016.
In 2018, when Gustavo Vega presided over the transitional CNE, the body that replaced the authorities of the Correista era who had been dismissed, an independent commission was formed that was commissioned to audit the process.
The audit commission, chaired by the teacher Claudia Storini, concluded that YASunidos should receive the “certificate of democratic legitimacy” (that is, the recognition that it complied with the signature requirement) in view of the “serious indications of arbitrariness” found .
Constitutional Court has 30 days to qualify the question about the ITT that YASunidos wants to take to a popular consultation
The new administration of the CNE, which took office to replace the transition council and which has been chaired since 2019 by Diana Atamaint, did not follow the recommendation of the audit commission and ratified what was done in 2014.
The Yasunidos appealed to the Constitutional Court, which admitted the case, but there is still no ruling. A favorable opinion is expected so that in the referendum on February 5, Ecuadorians will be asked about oil exploitation in Yasuní, but this did not happen.
“For years the CNE refused to declare compliance with the necessary signatures to convene a popular consultation of Yasuní, now comes the prior control of constitutionality. Constitutional Court, if they modify, delay or deny this consultation, they will once again violate our rights,” said YASunidos in September 2022.
The environmental collective plans to give a press conference tomorrow, January 25, in Quito to give more details about the process at the IACHR. (YO)
