The administration of US President Joe Biden asked Israel for old Hawk anti-aircraft missiles, which are stored there, in order to transfer them to Ukraine. However, the Israeli authorities refused to do so, according to the Axios portal, citing three Israeli and American officials.
So far, Israel has turned down most U.S. and Ukrainian requests for weapons, fearing that deteriorating relations with Russia could lead to complications in Syria. In this case, the Israeli authorities also refused, stating that they would not abandon their policy towards the conflict in Ukraine.
Hawk systems Israel purchased from the US in the 1960s to protect against Egyptian and Syrian airstrikes. Later they were withdrawn from service and replaced by more modern air defense systems. About 10 Hawk batteries and hundreds of missiles remain in storage in Israel, according to a senior Israeli official, writes Axios. At the same time, the American side was notified that the Hawk systems were “outdated” and could not function due to long storage without maintenance. However, Axios sources specify that the launchers have indeed fallen into disrepair, but hundreds of missiles can be repaired and brought to a state of combat readiness.
According to the agency, with a similar request, the United States turned not only to Israel, but also to other countries where Hawk air defense systems were once supplied.
