How to drive away crickets with molasses and other natural remedies

The winter months in Ecuador bring rain, humidity and insects, especially crickets.

The characteristic sound of these animals is a warning signal for anyone who is frightened by crickets, which are known to damage clothing, furniture, walls and even plants.

There are several ways to keep crickets away, but the first and most important step is to identify where the insects are entering: it can be open windows or doors, holes in the walls or ceiling, or through gardens.

How to scare away crickets

  • Cover doors, windows or gaps that are open.
  • Mix two tablespoons of molasses with water in a container and apply near where the crickets can be heard. They will be attracted to the substance and will jump into the container.
  • Open a can of beer and leave only a few drops. Place the can flat on the ground, as crickets will be attracted to the beer and become trapped inside the can.
  • Moisten a towel and leave it near where the animals are. They are likely to jump in the towel and could get caught.
  • Lower the temperature of the house or room where crickets usually enter. (YO)
