There is still no consensus in Western countries on the issue of the seizure of Russian assets, but there is a possibility of this event. Russia’s response to this will be a mirror image. This, according to RBC, was announced by Dmitry Chicu, Deputy Director of the Department for Control over External Restrictions of the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation.

In his opinion, today the West does not have a consolidated position on this matter. However, he added, some “probing” of the situation will be done at the expense of especially “radical-minded states”. After that, perhaps other countries will join this, Chicu believes.

The representative of the Ministry of Finance called Canada and Poland “radical” states.

He noted that the Russian authorities are “worried” by the fact that Western countries are trying to institutionalize the confiscation of Russian property. As an example, he cited the relevant resolutions of PACE and the UN General Assembly. According to Chicu, most likely, Western states will be guided by this. In this regard, three potential scenarios were prepared, depending on the development of the situation. Dmitry Timofeev, Director of the Department for Control over External Restrictions of the Ministry of Finance, spoke about them.

“Zero Option” Within its framework, the confiscation of assets is not expected, but a long-term freeze will continue, the official predicts.

Confiscation through criminal proceedings. According to the representative of the Ministry of Finance, in this case we are talking about Canada. Although the relevant laws have been adopted there, it is extremely difficult to “take away” such assets. “All this, apparently, can be challenged later, because the mechanisms for challenging are laid down and exist,” Timofeev said, doubting that such a scenario would become universal and be adopted by other countries.

Direct confiscation. Such a method requires a constitutional reorganization of the country, Timofeev pointed out, admitting that countries can still follow this path.

According to Chicu, the Ministry of Finance is closely monitoring the development of the situation around Russian assets abroad, and mirror measures “will be provided.”
