‘They called me a clown as a candidate for deputy’: Polo Baquerizo’s confessions about his time in politics

Polo Baquerizo was for 40 years the presenter of the popular game show do business with me. known as the eternal loser, in 1998 he was a candidate for deputy of Guayas, and won, for the missing Popular Democracy, whose presidential card was Jamil Mahuad. In 2002 he resigned from the Legislature to run as the first candidate for councilor of Guayaquil for the Social Christian Party (PSC).

The bold Polo Baquerizo continues in TC Television, although it is rarely seen on the screen. He is now a tiktoker.

He was a Guayaquil councilor for 16 years, from 2003 to 2019.

1.- What convinces a popular television host, who shines in his career, to participate in politics?

What happens is that I come from a father and grandfather from a political ancestor. What people don’t know is that I hated politics, it annoyed me, it annoyed me, because one sees a lot of ingratitude; I saw that. There is a maxim that says: “When I had money they called me Don Tomás, now that I have nothing they just call me Tomás.” When you are in politics or even at work, in certain instances or levels, everyone falls for you: “Brother, brother, yoke”, and even relatives who are not relatives are called relatives. The moment you end up there, in the private area, don’t say to yourself in the public area: “And where are they, can’t they see each other?”

2.- What did politics leave you with?

I think that politics made people see me in another facet. When I was a candidate, they told me: “A clown for a candidate for deputy.” I never started arguing with anyone; I went my way. (They said) that it was going to be a puppet, lamb, roasted, cooked, and I showed that it was not like that. I presented thirteen, fourteen projects. One of the projects, many of their hands trembled, I had a firm hand to be able to present it. I had to go one by one (for them to sign). It was a reform to the Constitution: the decentralization and deconcentration of the powers of the State. So that you have an idea, I presented a law for the disabled, for the media, the exoneration of interest for Ecapag debtors; That was the first project, because the Government of Fabián Alarcón canceled the debt that Ecapag had and all the debtors were swallowed, because it had accumulated. At the time the interest was waived, it was a breather, without taking into account the projects for cubic meters of water, electric power, etc.

3.- You said that you were described as a clown, and every time there are elections and TV people enter the ballot, they question it. Who has the right to participate?

Everyone has the right to participate. You cannot measure capacity by title. In life you learn to swim by swimming and not by correspondence: things by name. In the path of life one is forged. I did not have school to enter radio or television; I forged myself along the way, I polished myself, learning: that is life. But what does it mean that a social community or an artist can’t go… And why can’t they go? There may be social communicators who arrive and fail, or there may be social communicators like many lawyers, economists, etc.

Polo Baquerizo opens his first Instagram and TikTok account: this is the trend of “Yaja vive, yayuné”

4.- You are a social communicator…

I never use my title; I prefer that they see the person. Rather, the titles tell me nothing. You can ask: in Congress they called me “deputy”, and I answered: “No, tell me Polo”; in the Cantonal Council, “councillor”, (and I answered): “My name is Polo; I don’t call myself a councilor.”

“In the style of Polo Baquerizo”, criticism of Guillermo Lasso for joking with a citizen during the delivery of the house

5.- Would you return to public service?

I do not think so. I think no.
