Forest restoration, sustainable production and bio-enterprises are some of the results of the implementation of the agreement between Maate and Confeniae

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition (Maate) presented the results achieved after the implementation of an inter-institutional agreement signed between Maate, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) and the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of the Ecuadorian Amazon (Confeniae), whose objective was to coordinate actions between the parties and define lines of mutual cooperation to strengthen the conservation of forests, involving indigenous communities, peoples and nationalities located in the Ecuadorian Amazon. The event was led by Karina Barrera, Undersecretary for Climate Change.

This agreement allowed the execution of various activities associated with: forest restoration, sustainable production, sustainable forest management, design of life plans, bio-enterprises, among others. The main results include:

• The development of five life plans with the participation of Kichwa and Shuar peoples and nationalities, including:

  1. Yamanunka commune
  2. Chikta Commune
  3. The Pangui Association
  4. Seville Don Bosco Association
  5. Santiak Association

• The strengthening of bio-enterprises, which had 83% participation of the Shuar, Achuar, Siona, Kichwa, Waorani nationalities, benefiting more than 4,000 people.

• Implementation of Field Schools focused on the sustainable production of coffee, cocoa, livestock and palm, which had the participation of 1,497 participants of the Kichwa, Shuar, Andwa, Quijos, Siekopai, Waorani and Siona nationalities.

• Structuring of the Antisuyo Warmicuna School with the participation of approximately 100 women leaders, belonging to 56 communities of the 11 indigenous nationalities of the Amazon.

Karina Barrera, Undersecretary of Climate Change of Maate, highlighted that “within the framework of this agreement we managed to have a common objective that was the fight against deforestation and its associated emissions and thus develop concrete actions that have directly benefited peoples and nationalities indigenous people of the Amazon.

For her part, Lola Piyahuaje, vice president of the Confenaie, thanked the institutions involved and highlighted that through the agreement it was possible to articulate directly with the State, which allowed generating actions to reduce the negative effects of climate change.

During the meeting, compliance with this inter-ministerial agreement in its entirety was highlighted, where the three administering institutions ensured that the implementation of REDD+ measures and actions are given within the framework of respect for the governance structures of Confeniae, as well as processes consultation and broad participation with the bases.
