Russia has remained a key link in the supply of rare earth metals from China to the European Union. According to Bloomberg, despite the conflict in Ukraine and sanctions, in the first nine months of 2022, the volume of traffic on Russian railways increased significantly.
According to the agency, China supplies more than 90% of the rare earth metals used in the EU. For example, Chinese lanthanum is widely used by Western manufacturers of armor-piercing ammunition. China also supplies tungsten, which is used to make anti-tank weapons.
According to the latest EU data cited by Bloomberg, Russian railways remain an important link in supplies from China. The volume of Chinese metals transported by rail increased to 36 kt in the first nine months of 2022. Experts estimate that this is more than double the volume transported in all of 2021.
Bloomberg clarifies that rare earths are critical in the production of some products from batteries to microchips, and almost two-thirds of the identified stocks were under the control of China and Russia. The abandonment of Chinese tungsten mines could leave Western economies particularly vulnerable, the agency said.
