Experts from the American University UCSD said that algae have every chance to become a real superfood in the near future. According to Gismeteo, this is stated in a study published in Frontiers in Nutrition.

So, it was already known that the useful biomass of algae is 167 times higher than that of corn, but with the same area, algae can have a much higher yield.

What’s more, as the researchers noted, they are high in protein and fat, making it a much greener alternative to animal products, which also has a more sustainable production. The authors of the work emphasized that the protein in algae contains ten times more than in the same soy.

A group of European scientists some time ago determined that all of Europe could be provided with protein exclusively from Icelandic territories, where there is enough cheap and safe energy that opens up the prospect of algae production, especially since they do not even require clean water. However, the difficulty lies in consumer characteristics that need to be adjusted, and this applies, in particular, to the color, taste and smell of such products.
