The statement of the German Ministry of Defense about the intention to check the army stocks of Leopard tanks to find out the number of vehicles that can be allocated to Ukraine is “alarming” due to the belatedness of such actions, said the head of the Bundestag defense committee, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann.
According to The Financial Times, the politician stressed that “it is alarming that it took a new defense secretary to check how many Leopard tanks are, only now, 11 months after [ввода войск] Russia to Ukraine.”
The German Defense Ministry is headed by Boris Pistorius, who took up this position on January 17 after the resignation of Christine Lambrecht. During a meeting at the Ramstein base on Friday, January 20, representatives of the Western military departments could not agree on a unified position regarding the supply of tanks to Kyiv, which the Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly asked for. Pistorius then said that the ministry intends to “check how many tanks it can provide and whether they are compatible with the weapons supplied to Ukraine.”
“This does not prejudge the decision [вопроса о танках] It’s just preparation for the day that may well come <…>. Then we could act immediately and provide support within a very short time,” he added.
Recall that Berlin refuses to transfer the tanks first, promising to join this process after deliveries from the United States. At the same time, the statements of the US authorities and the new secretary of defense allowed Chancellor Olaf Scholz to approve the supply of tanks, but “he dodged it, infuriating half of his partners,” reports the FT, citing a diplomat from one of the Western countries.
