The Belarusian authorities have opened a new criminal case against opposition leader Sergei Tikhanovsky. According to RBC with reference to the Investigative Committee of Belarus, he was charged with disobeying the requirements of the prison administration.

“He violated the order of serving the sentence, did not respond to the legal requirements of the administration staff, was rude to them, and provoked conflicts among the inmates,” the Investigative Committee said in a statement. The politician was repeatedly subjected to penalties, he is on a preventive list as “prone to extremist and other destructive activities.”

A criminal case was opened against Tikhanovsky under Part 2 of Art. 411 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus (malicious disobedience to the requirements of the administration of a correctional institution executing a sentence of imprisonment committed by a person convicted of a grave and especially grave crime). He faces another two years in prison.

Tikhanovsky was sentenced in Belarus to 18 years in the case of extremism. In August 2022, he was transferred to a prison regime for a period of three years. He is serving his sentence in Prison No. 8 in the city of Zhodino, where, according to investigators, from August to November, he “repeatedly disobeyed the legal requirements of the administration of the institution.”
