Former commandos of Taura will sue the Ecuadorian State before the IACHR

The ex-commandos of Taura will sue the State before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and ask that it order Ecuador to compensate the rights of the military group.

This January 16, at 10:00 a.m., at the headquarters of the Social Club of Aerotechnicians in passive service of the Ecuadorian Air Force (FAE), this group will announce the start of the trial against the State on the 36th anniversary of the events.

On January 16, 1987, the Special Forces Squad of the Taura Commandos rose up in arms in defense of democracy and demanded the release of General Frank Vargas Pazzos, former commander of the FAE, who received the amnesty granted by law by the National Congress of that time.

The ex-commandos were detained in the old García Moreno prison and sentenced by a War Council that sentenced them to extraordinary major imprisonment for “attacking State security.”

In December 1988, the Ecuadorian people pressured the government of the day so that the ex-commandos of Taura could recover their freedom. Then, the full powers National Constituent Assembly of 2008 granted “general amnesty” to the Taura commandos, ordering the recovery of all their civil, political and economic rights.

98 assembly members grant amnesty to 63 former Taura commandos

The State, through the “Truth Commission”, in its “truth and justice” report, recognized as “crimes against humanity” the abuses, torture and outrages committed against the ex-commandos of Taura and demanded the immediate reparation and compensation regarding the Law of Reparation of Victims for the attacks and violations of human rights in Ecuador, during the government of León Febres-Cordero.

Since that date, the governments have not complied with the provision, for which reason they have victimized and re-victimized the situation of the ex-commandos of Taura on several occasions, who have decided on January 16, 2023 to file their claim against the State before the IACHR. (YO)
