Evacuation of a family and difficulty in vehicular traffic, the ravages of the rains in urban and rural areas of Ibarra

The heavy rains recently registered caused an increase in the flow of rivers and tributaries in the province of Imbabura. The prolonged rainfall in the afternoon and evening of this Saturday, January 14, and early today, Sunday, increased the water volume of the Tahuando River, in Ibarra.

In the Piedra Chapetona sector there was a landslide on part of the land adjacent to the property of Henry Armas. The torrent carried away a bank of the tributary and left a house less than five meters from the river, reported the Ibarra Fire Department.

The people who occupied the house were evacuated by Fire and Risk personnel to safeguard their lives, said Jimmy Marcillo, director of Risk Management, in Zone 1.

The Ibarra relief agencies recommended to the owners of the lands that are next to the Tahuando river bed to remove the accumulated material, especially stones that can cause the obstruction of the course and overflow the water.

They advised the residents of those sites to place large stones at the base of the affected property to prevent further inconvenience and asked the owner to build a retaining wall with gabions on the slope, in order to prevent further damage from winter.

The La Esperanza, Zuleta, Ejido de Caranqui and La Victoria sectors were also flooded by the large accumulation of rainwater.

Personnel from the Ibarra Fire Department advanced to those places to evacuate the water with suction pumps and motors.

The rainwater reached a height of about 70 centimeters on several roads, hindering vehicular circulation and generating some fear in drivers who hastily left those places.

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inamhi) predicted that this day the rains will continue at a medium high level, especially in the center and west of this northern province. (YO)
