One of the leaders of the Dakar overall standings in the truck category, Czech Ales Loprais, during the ninth stage of the rally, knocked down a fan, who later died, RBC reports.

According to media reports, Loprais’ truck was overcoming another dune, on top of which were several fans. The truck hit one of them. From the video from the scene of the incident, it can be seen that the man got up on his own after the collision. However, a few hours later, the injured Italian felt unwell, and during transportation to the hospital suffered a heart attack and died.

Loprais said on social networks that he did not know about the presence of a fan on the route and had on-board and external videos confirming this. “However, this will not change the fact that human life has died out,” he added, expressing his condolences to the family, relatives and friends of the deceased. Later it became known that the crew of Loprais, who took first place after the ninth stage of the rally, withdrew from the race.

As noted, this is the 46th death among fans in the history of Dakar and the first since 2016.
