Three people are sentenced to 20 months in prison for attacking police officers in the Palora canton

In an abbreviated procedure hearing, Licet P., Isabel S. and Dani S. were sentenced to twenty months in prison for their participation in the crime of attack or resistance.

Judge Jorge Cárdenas ordered as comprehensive reparation that those sentenced pay $1,200 to a police officer who was physically assaulted and $300 to the National Police for the damage caused to the facilities of the Community Police Unit (UPC) of the Palora canton (Morona Santiago) and a patrolman.

According to prosecutor Xavier Muñoz, on September 18, 2022, police officers arrested a citizen against whom there was a warrant for a food claim.

The detainee was transferred to the UPC, where at around 3:00 p.m. more than sixty people arrived, several of them with their faces covered and carrying spears, knives, machetes, sticks, and other objects.

This group of people demanded the release of the detainee, threatened to kill five police officers who were at the scene, and tried to force their way into the UPC.

Faced with this situation, the police officers explained to them the reasons why he could not be released. However, the protesters caused damage to the facilities, broke the glass of a patrol car and physically assaulted a commanding officer. They entered and caused the escape of the detainee.

To save his life, one of the police officers fled behind the UPC.

The protesters chased him and physically attacked him, so a citizen who was passing through the place decided to help the agent, but he was also attacked.

Seeing that the lives of both were in danger, the police officer drew his firearm and fired four times, injuring citizens Raúl U. and Héctor V.

At that moment, Licet P. (wife of the detainee) snatched the weapon from the uniformed officer. The protesters continued to attack the two victims until other police officers arrived who managed to withdraw the group of people and arrest those now sentenced, in addition to Raúl U. and Héctor V.

During the investigation, the Prosecutor’s Office collected sufficient elements of conviction: versions of the five police officers and others who came to the so-called help, two reports of recognition of the scene of the events and evidence, an assessment of the damage caused to the UPC and the patrol car. , certified copies of the personal arrest warrant and food trial, medical, psychological and social environment assessments performed on the police, as well as audio and video expertise.

The three people were sentenced according to article 283, paragraph 4, of the Comprehensive Organic Criminal Code (COIP), which penalizes the crime of attack or resistance with deprivation of liberty for five to seven years.
