What the Q of LGBTQ+ means and other gender identity terms you should know

They say that in life the only permanent thing is change. Language is no exception and this includes words that refer to gender identity, one of the most significant changes in recent times.

The most common gender identity terms are male and female, but others have emerged for people who don’t fit into those categories, some of which have given rise to the acronym LGBTQ+.

What does the acronym for LGBTQ+ and other words mean?

The acronym LGBTQ is formed by the initials of the words: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer. While CNN in Spanish explains these and other meanings that we should know.

Lesbian

A noun and adjective for women who are attracted to other women, although some prefer to be called gay or queer.

gay

An adjective and a noun, typically used to describe men who are attracted to other men.

Bisexual

Someone who is attracted to more than one gender.

Transgender

Transgender people can identify as male or female. What both groups share is the innate sense that their gender identity does not match the sex they were assigned at birth.

Queer

“Queer” is being claimed by many as a catch-all term of self-affirmation, mainly among those who find other labels restrictive. However, it was considered an offense for being homosexual. Some still believe it is a homophobic slur.

Some may have a gender that combines masculine and feminine elements or may not identify with either. Its most common synonyms include genderqueer and gender non-conforming.

Pansexual

It is an adjective used for those who are attracted to all types of people, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation.

cisgender

The prefix “cis” means “on this side.” Adding it to the suffix “gender” creates a word for someone whose gender identity aligns with the sex they were assigned at birth. That is, someone who does not identify as transgender.

Other letters that have been added to the acronym LGBTQ are the ‘I’ for intersex, the ‘A’ for asexual and also the + sign to represent all those identities that are not visibly included in the general abbreviation.

intersex

It refers to people who are born with some male and other female biological characteristics, which makes it difficult to assign a specific sex. Generally, this is caused by factors such as hormonal or genetic conditions, but it is not considered a medical problem.

Asexual

It is any person who does not experience any sexual attraction. It is not chosen like celibacy, it is simply something intrinsic to some individuals.

These terms related to gender identity are a sample of human diversity, and although others are missing, the essential thing is to know that those who identify with them are also very important to society.
