Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has appointed Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, commander of a grouping of forces in the zone of a special military operation. It is reported by RIA Novosti.
“Army General Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the RF Armed Forces, has been appointed Commander of the Joint Group of Troops (Forces),” the ministry said.
His deputies were Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces Oleg Salyukov, Deputy Chief of the General Staff Alexei Kim, and Commander-in-Chief of the Aerospace Forces Sergei Surovikin, who previously held the position of commander of the joint group.
The level of command in the framework of a special military operation in Ukraine has been increased, among other things, due to the expansion of the scale of tasks to be solved and the need for closer interaction between the types and types of troops, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
It is reported that Valery Gerasimov has headed the General Staff since 2012. Prior to that, he commanded the troops of the Leningrad, and then the Moscow military districts. In 2001-2003, Gerasimov commanded the 58th Army of the North Caucasian Military District, which was then fighting in Chechnya.
For the first time, the Ministry of Defense announced the post of commander of the joint group of troops on October 8 last year. Then this position was taken by Surovikin, who had previously commanded the Southern Group of Forces operating in Ukraine.
