The Metropolitan Institute of Heritage of Quito, in coordination with the Presidency of the Republic, carries out maintenance and waterproofing works on the roofs of the Palacio de Carondeletto protect the good condition of the structure and keep the property in perfect condition.

The Presidential Palace or Carondelet is an emblematic heritage monument, whose first constructions date from the years 1612, 1627 and 1747. It was remodeled in 1805 and enlarged between 1847 and 1890 until it has its present appearance.
The current maintenance works, which began in December 2022, will have a duration of 120 days (four months)and include the following aspects: waterproofing intervention on the roofs of the central and western blocks, intervention and change of stoneware on the terrace facing Plaza Grande, and painting of the building’s façade facing Espejo street.
For these works, several scaffolding towers have been placed at different points of the building. In addition, installed a temporary metal roof on the main balcony facing the Plaza Grande. These structures will be removed once the maintenance work is completed.
The Heritage Institute indicated in a bulletin that all the metallic structures that have been installed for the execution of these works comply with current safety regulations, to protect the safety of workers, passers-by and officials.

Likewise, it is detailed that the Municipality of Quito, within the framework of the commemoration of the Bicentennial of the Battle of Pichinchahas executed, since the beginning of 2022, maintenance and restoration works in the buildings and structures located around the Plaza Grande, such as the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Archbishop’s Palace as well as the Municipal Palace, in addition to the monument to the ‘First Cry of Independence’ and the Carondelet Palace.
As indicated, for this 2023 these works will be carried out “with greater force, since, for decades they were not executed and are essential to value and preserve this emblematic point of the historical heritage of our city and humanity”. (YO)
