European politicians turned to social networks Facebook (recognized in Russia as an extremist organization, whose activities are prohibited – ed. note) and Twitter with a request to close the accounts of more than a hundred Russian embassies and government agencies. According to RIA Novosti with reference to the Financial Times, they are accused of spreading “misinformation” about the special operation in Ukraine.

According to the newspaper, officials urged the platforms to scrupulously enforce their own policies and take urgent action against content that violates the law and the terms of use of these platforms. Vera Zhurova, Vice President of the European Commission for Values and Transparency, told the FT that these social networks need to become more transparent about their own moderation.

The FT writes that Europe is dissatisfied with the information posted on these platforms about the development of biological weapons in Ukraine, as well as posts about the maternity hospital in Mariupol, which was used as a base for the Azov battalion (a criminal case has been initiated against the fighters of the battalion in the Russian Federation, the organization itself is banned in Russia as extremist).

According to Omelas, more than 120 Russian embassies and heads of diplomatic missions have Twitter accounts.

Recall, on the eve of the Tverskoy Court of Moscow recognized the Meta company, as well as its social networks Facebook and Instagram, as extremist organizations and banned their activities on the territory of the Russian Federation. Thus, the claim of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation was satisfied.

According to the court decision, the restrictions will affect only the organization of the company’s representative office in Russia, as well as the blocking of Facebook and Instagram, the WhatsApp messenger will continue to work. According to the prosecutor, Russians will not be held accountable for using Facebook and Instagram already blocked by Roskomnadzor in Russia.
