Russian Ambassador Mikhail Galuzin was summoned to the Japanese Foreign Ministry. According to RIA Novosti, the ambassador was protested after Moscow’s decision to withdraw from the dialogue on a peace treaty. The protest was served by Vice Foreign Minister Takeo Mori.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida called unacceptable the decision of the Russian Federation to withdraw from the dialogue on a peace treaty. At the same time, Kishida noted that Tokyo does not intend to revise the budget item for the 2022 fiscal year, which will begin on April 1, which concerns joint economic activities with Russia, since the funds “are primarily directed to support Japanese companies.”

As stated earlier in the Russian Foreign Ministry, Russia will not continue negotiations with Japan on a peace treaty in the current conditions. The statement also says that Russia is withdrawing from the dialogue with Japan on establishing joint economic activities in the South Kuriles and is ending visa-free travel to these islands for Japanese citizens.

The department clarified that negotiations on a peace treaty would be terminated due to “the inability to discuss the signing of a fundamental document on bilateral relations with a state that takes openly unfriendly positions and seeks to harm the interests of our country.”
