Guayaquil medical centers receive repeat offenders with COVID-19 and other respiratory diseases

Despite the fact that the cases of COVID-19 remain low in Guayaquil and -in general- in Ecuador, both the Minister of Health, José Ruales, and doctors from Guayaquil forecast an increase in infections in the coming days due to the mobilizations by Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties.

At the moment, in Guayaquil, 1,580 confirmed cases with PCR tests are reported between epidemiological weeks 51 and 52 of the year 2022. In addition to two new deaths due to this virus.

Three people died from COVID-19 and 1,020 were infected in the last week in Guayaquil

According to the epidemiological report of the Municipality, there was a decrease in COVID-19 infections, compared to weeks ago when there was a high incidence of cases.

At this time there is little assistance from infected people to the city’s laboratories and health centers.

The Minister of Health, José Ruales, explained yesterday during his visit to Guayaquil that cases in the country are low except in the provinces of Los Ríos, Loja and Azuay, where there is evidence of an increase in infections.

“We are going to continue worrying about the security measures, in addition to the increase in rain, the cold, the winter season on the Coast, which are factors that can trigger cases of COVID-19 and influenza,” he said.

In Guayaquil, doctors report the arrival of patients who are repeat offenders with COVID-19. Some have had high flow cannula put in because they were short of breath.

This was detailed by the intensive care doctor Alberto Campodónico, from the staff Kennedy Alborada Clinic Hospital.

He explained that older adults and even young patients with moderate complications from COVID-19 arrive. Patients with catastrophic illnesses and children are also reported.

This is also evident in health centers in Guayaquil. For example, Javier and his 10-year-old son arrived at the Valdivia Center, of the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute (IESS), in the south of the city with respiratory symptoms.

They were going to have a COVID-19 test because they had been feeling sick for three days, coughing, and running mucous.

Likewise, at health center No. 3, on Francisco Segura streets and Quito avenue, relatives also arrived with patients who presented fever and respiratory symptoms.

According to the medical records in clinics and hospitals, the majority are patients with vaccination schedules, which is why the request to maintain biosafety standards is required, especially the use of masks in closed spaces, as well as in places of large agglomeration which includes public transport.
