The positivity for COVID-19 dropped slightly in Quito in the last week of 2022

Some 30 people were waiting for a medical assessment outside the IESS Quito Sur hospital, this Tuesday, January 3.

They were inside some white tents that have been designated for those people who have respiratory symptoms.

Before 11:00 a.m., José Lagua’s vital signs were taken and he went to wait sitting in one of the chairs.

The 45-year-old man works as a security supervisor.

He said that his body, head and eyes hurt a lot.

In his opinion, he was affected by the change in climate, a flu that had just passed and thyroid problems that he suffers from.

I had been having these discomforts for 24 hours. He was hoping to be evaluated by a specialist to have a test to detect coronavirus or another alternative.

Two key weeks are coming to determine if the holiday takes its toll with a rebound in cases of respiratory conditions

He has not been in social gatherings in recent days or in contact with any member of his family since he lives alone.

He had been vaccinated with two doses and had doubts about getting the two boosters.

Alexandra Argotti was sitting in the pediatric section with her 10-year-old daughter. The girl woke up with a cough and stomach ache. She had a temperature of 36.5.

His mother had given him Buprex Forte. They had been waiting for over an hour.

To say goodbye to 2022 there was a social gathering, but -he added- with few people, six to seven. He believes that the girl may have been affected by the weather.

Rosa Villacís, Martha’s mother, had pneumonia since January 1.

Her relatives took her to the hospital, but she was sent home.

Since she did not improve, they took her back to that nursing home. She was prescribed an antibiotic. She has already been tested for COVID-19 and she was negative. Chest pain, temperature, difficulty breathing were the symptoms that the woman presented.

Sergio Carrasco, medical technical director of the IESS Quito Sur hospital, pointed out that for two weeks there has been a decrease in care for children, while for adults a constant flow has been maintained.

Between 350 and 400 cases of respiratory symptoms arrive daily. Of them, 60% adults, 40% pediatrics.

Karina Zambrano, zonal analyst of Epidemiological Surveillance of Zone 9 of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), which corresponds to the Metropolitan District of Quito, pointed out that between week 51 and 52 of 2022, that is, the last two weeks of the year, there was a decrease in suspected cases of coronavirus and also in positivity.

In the last week, the positivity was 25%, while in the penultimate week it was 30%.

At the end of 2022, COVID-19 and influenza were above other respiratory conditions, according to the MSP. (YO)
