The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation has prepared a bill depriving foreigners of the opportunity to legalize themselves in Russia through fictitious marriages and fictitious establishment of paternity. Currently, the project is undergoing interdepartmental coordination, TASS reports with reference to the message of the official representative of the ministry, Irina Volk.
According to her, over the 11 months of 2022, the Ministry of Internal Affairs canceled about 400 documents issued to foreigners for living in Russia.
Under the Citizenship Law, residents of other countries and stateless persons can be granted Russian citizenship under a simplified procedure if they have been married to a Russian citizen for at least three years. Moreover, if the family has a common child, then the three-year period is not necessary.
In March 2022, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that they were considering introducing criminal liability for fictitious marriages registered by foreigners for legalization in Russia. It was also reported that law enforcement officers are monitoring Internet resources to identify offers of illegal services for the legalization of foreigners.
