The special services of Russia and Kazakhstan conducted a joint operation and stopped the activities of an organized criminal group (OCG) in Baikonur, the press service of the National Security Committee (KNB) of Kazakhstan reports.

According to the department, the organized criminal group included citizens of Kazakhstan and Russia. Detentions were carried out simultaneously in the cities of Astana, Kyzylorda and Konaev, 18 leaders and active members of the group were detained.

The KNB notes that the organized crime group “had a negative impact on the criminal situation in the city of Baikonur for a long time”, was involved in kidnappings, blackmail, robbery with weapons and theft. The special operation to detain the criminals was being prepared “for many months.” At present, the involvement of the detainees in other crimes is being checked.

Baikonur is a city in Kazakhstan and the cosmodrome of the same name, which Russia leases until 2050. On the territory of the city there are objects of the cosmodrome, as well as social and infrastructure facilities for the employees of the cosmodrome and their families. The city is governed by the Russian administration under the leadership of the head of administration, appointed by a joint decision of the presidents of Russia and Kazakhstan. The population of the city for 2020 was about 77 thousand people.
