An aviation accident on the Bellamaría-Santa Rosa route, in the Santa Rosa canton, El Oro province, caused the death of the pilot of a small plane, who was preparing to carry out fumigation work in that sector.
The air incident occurred after noon on Friday, December 23. As Juan Carlos Mejía Garcés, 36 years old, and a native of the city of Puyo, the victim of this incident was identified.
Witnesses to the accident pointed out that Mejía was carrying out a reconnaissance flight in the sector, and that when he was preparing to descend to later carry out his activity, he would have had a mishap that first caused the aircraft to fall and later explode.

The reasons for the accident are unknown, but no one was able to intervene in the rescue work due to the explosion, which left the body of the pilot charred.
A resident of that town, who did not identify himself, commented that probably since it was a mountainous area, and that the pilot was not fully aware, he would have run into a tree and lost control of the ship.

Personnel from the Santa Rosa canton fire brigade arrived at the scene and collaborated in the rescue of the victim.
