The Minsk agreements of 2014-2015 gave Ukraine time to strengthen the army, said former French President Francois Hollande.

Journalists asked Hollande if he agrees with the statement of ex-German Chancellor Angela Merkel that the agreements “froze” the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and it was not resolved, but they “gave Ukraine precious time,” RBC writes. “Yes, Angela Merkel is right. The Minsk agreements stopped the Russian offensive for a while,” Hollande confirmed, adding that “it was important to know how the West would take advantage of this respite.”

According to him, over the time that has passed since the conclusion of the agreements, Ukraine has “strengthened its military position”, the country’s army has become better trained and equipped compared to 2014. “It is the merit of the Minsk agreements that the Ukrainian army got such an opportunity,” the politician added.

We will remind, earlier Merkel said that the agreements were concluded in order to “give time to Ukraine”, which since 2014 “has become stronger”. At that time, “Putin could easily capture” Ukraine, and NATO countries would hardly have provided Kyiv with the support that the country is now receiving, Merkel pointed out at the time. Her words drew criticism from the Russian authorities and some European politicians.
