Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, a former chief rabbi of Moscow, urged members of the Jewish community in Russia to leave the country “while possible” so that they “are not made scapegoats” for the difficulties caused by the military operation in Ukraine, writes The Guardian.

Goldschmidt told the publication that anti-Semitism is on the rise in Russia. “That’s why I think the best option for Russian Jews is to leave,” he said.

At the same time, he noted that whenever “the political system [России] was in danger,” the country’s authorities tried to “redirect the anger and discontent of the masses to the Jewish community.” This happened “in tsarist times and at the end of the Stalinist regime,” he noted.

The press service of the Moscow Jewish Religious Organization (MERO), due to the fact that Goldschmidt no longer cooperates with the organization, refused to comment on the words of the rabbi. “He makes the statements he sees fit,” a spokeswoman for the organization said.

Goldschmidt resigned and left for Israel in May 2022, explaining his departure by his father’s illness.
