The well-known “fifth river” of the city overflowed with faith this Saturday, December 24. After two years of a break forced by the pandemic, the traditional Child Traveler Pass was held again in person and the party in honor of the Child Jesus had music, dance, prayers and much joy. There were so many people that the order of departure of the floats was delayed.
The Pass is the most important religious event in the city and this was demonstrated by the massive presence of participants, but also by the attendance of important leaders of the Catholic Church such as the Apostolic Nuncio (representative of Pope Francis in Ecuador), Andrés Carrascosa.
He came exclusively for this day. He celebrated mass in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and placed the revered image on the prepared altar on the main altar.
Cuenca parishioners finalize the details for the Child Traveler Pass that will be this Saturday, December 24
The faithful approached this place to cross themselves and give a brief prayer of thanks or request.
He stressed that the most important thing about the day is the faith that the citizens have and that was expressed in the streets full of believers who seek him (Jesus) to overcome adversity. He also felt a special attachment to the city, because he was born in Cuenca, but from Spain.
This event has a cultural perspective and that was felt very strongly by Pablo Coronel, coordinator of the managers in Cuenca, who for 13 years has brought together different musicians and artists to form a single group. For him, this day is “the best” and that is why not his greatest collaboration is to lend the typical costumes from his costume store.
“Everyone wants to enjoy Cuencan Christmas, which is the Child’s Pass, one gets excited because they know the savior is coming,” he said.
In this same sense, the singer Diego Zamora mentioned that this day is very important, because in addition to the religious and cultural it helps the economic reactivation of different sectors.
Disagreement regarding the Child Traveler Pass in Cuenca, a few hours after the activity was carried out
In addition, he said that no matter how virtual there is, nothing compares to feeling the energy of the people. His colleague Wahsington Noroña mentioned that this is the way in which the people of Cuenca ask the world for peace so that the injustices and wars that plague the planet end soon.
But the emotionality of the Pass was partially overshadowed by the lack of agreements between the organizers and the participants, which delayed the departure of the floats.
Security was in charge of the group of laymen John XXII, who restricted the passage. They were the only ones who had the advantage of having the float in front of the security fence, the rest of the faithful had to wait until after noon to be able to parade. This in 2019 did not happen and everything flowed faster.
The Child Traveler Pass has been taking place since 1961 and the venerated image that is the reason for this meeting is guarded by the nuns of the cloister of the Monastery of Carmen de la Asunción. It was baptized as El Viajero because its first owner, Archbishop Miguel Cordero, according to the story, took it to the Vatican and Bethlehem.
According to the schedule, the image of the Traveler Child will be taken down from the altar at 3:00 p.m. and from there it will return to the Monastery to be kept until next year. (YO)
