The executive director of the Eurovision music contest, Martin Österdahl, said that Russia’s removal from the contest was a difficult decision. It is reported by RBC with reference to an interview with Österdahl BBC 4.

“When you look back in time, you see that the Eurovision Song Contest is like a report on what happened in Europe, what trends were in Europe,” he also noted.

According to Österdahl, even while declaring its apolitical nature, Eurovision must uphold “the basic and highest values of democracy.”

This year Russia did not participate in Eurovision. The decision to remove the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) took on February 25 due to concerns that “the inclusion of the Russian entry in this year’s competition will lead to a deterioration in its reputation.”

The competition was held in Italy. The victory was won by the Ukrainian group Kalush Orchestra with the song “Stephania”. However, the competition in 2023 will eventually be held in the UK, since Ukraine cannot guarantee the safety of participants and spectators.

The host city of the competition is Liverpool.
