Ecuador and Colombia advance in an agreement to strengthen border control with a plan that would be ready at the beginning of 2023

In order to reduce the presence of irregular armed groups linked to drug trafficking and transnational crime on the Ecuadorian border with Colombia, the defense ministries of both countries agreed on mechanisms to strengthen surveillance and control of said area.

Next week, on December 28, the head of the Joint Command of the Ecuadorian Armed Forces and the general commander of the Colombian Armed Forces will have a meeting in which the parameters of a border protection plan will be established.

The agreement establishes that the military command of both countries will declare urgent the structuring of the plan that will reinforce the combined action of the troops in the border area.

The plan is expected to be ready by early 2023. And it will contain, among other things, the protocols for border control and surveillance, mechanisms for the exchange of sensitive information, and joint activities to prevent the passage of armed personnel between one country and another.

With this initiative, Ecuador and Colombia aim to have effective coordination of operations in the territory, especially in areas considered high risk due to clashes between armed groups associated with drug trafficking.

The previous week, the President of the Republic, Guillermo Lasso, affirmed that the gesture of the Colombian president Gustavo Petro to seek a rapprochement to carry out joint operations on the border is something that should be appreciated. And he expressed his predisposition for that to materialize. (YO)
