Pope Francis addressed the faithful with a Christmas message Urbi et Orbi (“To the City and the World”), in which he announced an acute lack of peace in various regions and called for an end to hostilities in Ukraine, Vatican News reports.

The pontiff urged everyone to “see the faces of Ukrainian brothers and sisters” who are experiencing darkness and cold this year, many of whom are far from home due to ten months of hostilities. “May the Lord inspire us to make concrete gestures of solidarity to help all those who are suffering, and may he enlighten the minds of those who have the power to silence the roar of weapons,” the Pope called, adding that the fighting must “end immediately” .

The pontiff also declared a serious “peace famine” in other regions due to what he called a “third world war”, mentioning Syria, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Sahel, Yemen, Myanmar and Iran. “Let the baby Jesus support the Christian communities living in the Middle East, so that each of these countries can experience the beauty of brotherly coexistence between people of different faiths,” the pontiff urged in his address. He then prayed for a truce and reconciliation in the conflict regions.
