When is the flowering of the guayacanes in Zapotillo?

In mid-December, a yellow mantle begins to cover the ground in the forests and parks of the Zapotillo canton, in Loja. It is about the flowering of the guayacanes, a spectacle of nature that attracts thousands of tourists, national and foreign, each year, impressed by the vibrant color of the flowers that fall from the trees.

Because the flowering of the guayacanes depends to a great extent on rain and humidity, the date to observe the budding of the flowers is still uncertain. The inhabitants of the parishes of Cazaderos, Mangahúrco, and Bolaspamba, in Zapotillo, have expressed their concern about the drought.

“In previous years, flowering occurred so punctually the second week of December, something that still hasn’t happened. Of course, the month is not over yet, so we are waiting not only for it to flourish, but also for hundreds of thousands of tourists who arrive to get out of the ordinary of the big cities,” explained Gladis Astudillo, president of the Cazaderos parish.

In a statement, he announced that the trees are expected to flower with the first rains of 2023.

“What we do have prepared are some activities that will be announced as time progresses, so that the public can visit this beautiful place. We will start with a cultural night, fairs and welcome to tourists by the different service providers that are ready to assist them in the area of ​​gastronomy, accommodation and more”, said Astudillo.

The Zapotillo authorities are waiting for people who take advantage of the Christmas and New Year holidays to travel and enjoy the magical natural event, which only happens once a year and lasts between five and eight days.

The guayacanes also flourish in Colimes and Samanes Park, in Guayas, and the Arenillas Ecological Reserve, in the province of El Oro. Although on social networks, some users have reported the outbreak of yellow flowers in the streets of Guayaquil and Quito.
