Silver Code for health establishments includes five forms of care in the event of armed incursions

This Wednesday, December 14, there will be a drill in the ECU911 of Samborondón for the implementation of the so-called Silver Code in health establishments.

According to the Ministry of Health, so far in 2022 there have been seven events with armed incursions.

José Ruales, Minister of Health, explained that the Silver Code has been worked on in the last two weeks with the Ministry of the Interior, the General Command of the Police, the ECU911, with the units of that State portfolio and the Directorate of Management of risks.

He argued that it includes the response for the safety of patients, of health personnel both internally in hospitals, emergency rooms, rural health centers, medical brigade personnel who go to communities, pre-hospital care.

One of the latest events was recorded at the Chone hospital. Armed criminals raided that health home and subdued nursing staff.

The Police were displaced to that health home in the face of the emergency. The individuals would have entered to murder a subject and when trying to escape they took over the hospital.

This occurred on November 27, which prompted the authorities to announce that security mechanisms will be strengthened.

Ruales indicated that a protocol has been prepared for various forms of care: when there are patients in pre-hospital care, such as the request for an ambulance for a person who suffered injuries from firearms or knives or confrontation with criminal groups.

In addition, when these patients arrive on their own at hospitals or health centers, due to the presence of armed groups or individuals in health units.

Also for staff working in medical units in areas considered to be a security risk and for staff working in brigades also in risk areas.

He added that the code identifies the risk and the response that can be from the Police or the Ministry of Health and also aspects such as metal detection or surveillance cameras, which were not previously a requirement.

It would also include dissuasive patrols, intervention in places where there are criminal gangs that threaten and the protection of health personnel. (YO)
